Home Fellowship Groups - HFG Leaders

God created us to live in community. In today's world we can often feel alone or isolated from other Christians. At Church of the Good Shepherd we have created Home Fellowship Groups to help us get to know one another in a personal, genuine way. These groups meet weekly and are made up of 5-15 adults (children are very welcome--bring them along!). In these groups, the life of the church is lived out together through the development of intimate relationships, the discovery and use of spiritual gifts, discipleship, and evangelism.

Being part of a small group is an important part of the privilege and responsibility that comes with being a part of the Body of Christ. God desires to heal us, satisfy our deepest needs, and flow through us to help meet the needs of others--Home Fellowship groups are a place where this happens!.

If you would like to get involved in a Home Fellowship Group, please see the list of leaders and meeting information below. Several new groups have recently started up and they would love to have you join them!

Our Vision Statement - Our Vision Statement

The purpose of Church of the Good Shepherd is to fulfill the biblical mandate, as a household of God, by worshiping God in spirit and truth, preaching the Gospel, making disciples of all nations, defending God's truth, living in fellowship with one another, and giving ourselves to unceasing prayer.

Worshiping God in spirit and truth: Since God Almighty alone is worthy of and delights in our praise, Church of the Good Shepherd will work at worship which is true to scripture, God-focused, reverent, joyful, and led by the Holy Spirit.1

Preaching the gospel: Considering that God, not wanting any to perish, has prolonged these days before Christ's imminent return and final judgment; Church of the Good Shepherd will become all things to all people, turning our backs on our own comfort and prejudice to proclaim salvation through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.2

Making disciples of all nations: Realizing that all true Christians are disciples and that the greater reward of following Christ requires sacrifice, Church of the Good Shepherd will invest time and resources in relationships that encourage our continual growth.3

Standing for God's truth: Because God has ordained the church, His Household as the pillar and foundation of the truth, Church of the Good Shepherd will unashamedly witness to God's truth in our words and actions, in fulfillment of our individual callings.4

Living in fellowship with one another: Recognizing that those who have God as their Father will be united to His household, the Church of the Living God; Church of the Good Shepherd will live together in unity, intimacy, and love— receiving God's grace through one another according to the gifts which each of us has received.5

Giving ourselves to unceasing prayer: Knowing that God desires to use the prayers of His children to give us all good things, and God's word directs us to pray continually, Church of the Good Shepherd will not neglect the great privilege of entering boldly into God's presence, remembering that if we have not received, it is because we have not asked.6

What Is CGS? - Who We Are

Church of the Good Shepherd is:

Protestant
Salvation comes only through God's free gift of Jesus Christ alone by grace through faith alone, not by our own efforts to be "good enough." The Bible is the only infallible guide to how we should live to the glory of God.

Reformed
God is sovereign-the all-powerful ruler over His creation. Holding to the historic beliefs of the Reformation, we believe all of life is to be lived to His glory, obeying His Word.

Evangelical
Jesus said that to see heaven, a man must be born again. The Good News is that all who are born again will go to heaven. The Church's responsibility is to make disciples of all nations, baptizing and teaching them to obey everything He has commanded.

Joyful
God tells us that the Kingdom of God is a matter of "righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit" (Romans 14:17). We see all of these as the fruit of the gospel working in those who believe.

ClearNote Campus Fellowship - ClearNote Campus Fellowship

What is ClearNote Campus Fellowship?

Well, of course it is “a missional ministry of Church of the Good Shepherd to Indiana University.” There, all of your questions are answered, aren’t they?

ClearNote Campus Fellowship, or CNCF for those with a penchant for acronyms, is Church of the Good Shepherd’s attempt to reach out with the gospel to the students at Indiana University by going onto campus with small-group Bible studies, a weekly meeting, and a host of other activities. The fundamental goals we have are to see students come to faith and become incorporated into the life of the local church at CGS. I like to think of it as a mutant arm growing out of CGS towards the IU campus, which seeks to bring unbelievers into our body such that they might know salvation and the joys of fellowship in the church.

Thus, you ask, “What does this have to do with regular church-people and those who aren’t situated at or attending IU?” I’m glad you asked, as there are a myriad of ways anyone in the church can help get this ministry started.

Primarily, the church body can help by continuing to do what it does so well: welcoming people into the church, their homes, and their small groups and loving them. We are also going to need help making fliers, moving sound equipment every week, setting up for a weekly meeting, and various other tasks, so if you are able and willing, we will be able to use your help.

Finally, an exhortation: churches that are reformed in doctrine sadly carry the stereotype of being inactive, particularly with regard to evangelism – we are known as the “frozen chosen.” What is even sadder is that this is often true of us and we just don’t care. Ironically and tragically, we who understand God’s grace are frequently the slowest to simply tell others about it, and it is a great sin. Church for many of us has become a sanctuary from the world, a place where we can consume until we are fat and happy, rather than a hospital where we bring the spiritually sick, or a training ground where we prepare to go out into the world to do battle. Thus, CNCF is a very practical way we can take steps as a church to remedy this problem, such that we might reach out to a particular group – students – who are just as lost as we once were.

Work continues on the building site. The curbs, parking areas and driveways are mostly completed. After the weather breaks in the spring we will be able to put down the asphalt.
The excavators are now placing the topsoil in the parking lot islands so that they can be seeded as soon as possible. They have also put down a rock base on the building pad (the footprint of the building) so that the construction work in the winter months will be less messy. We hope to be pouring the foundations very soon.

We are thankful that we recently received a long-awaited permit from the State of Indiana. Reception of this permit has allowed us to apply for the next level of construction permits from the county. This next-level application has been made and we are waiting to hear from the county officials. These permits, when received, will allow us to pour the foundations and construct the basic shell of the building.

We are also thankful to have been able to close on the construction loan. The building process is now in full swing.

Remember to pray for the project. We have to have certain things done in order to get permits. We have to have the right windows of opportunity with the weather to get certain things done. We have to have permits in hand in order to take advantage of the given windows of opportunity. This is part of the reason it takes so long to build a building.

Excavation and Silt Fence Construction - Building Project

Following the announcement that the excavation permit for the new building had been issued it may seem like not much has happened on the new church building, but actually the contrary is true. The past weeks have been very busy with negotiating possible excavators for the project. This part of the building process is not visible but is extremely important because a hasty decision made in impatience may mean the loss of many thousands of dollars. The excavation company that is finally awarded our contract will put us into their schedule (all of these companies are very busy so the exact time digging will commence is unknown).

In the meantime, you may have noticed the removal of trees by the road. This was done to prepare the site for the start of excavation. These trees obscured the view to the future building and, according to the county codes, had to be removed, as the sidewalk line is set back off of the road. New trees will be planted along the sidewalk in the future. A crew also constructed a silt fence in July, in order to comply with codes and prepare the site for excavation. A big thanks to the Sparks family (especially Eagle Scout Jay) and the Boy Scouts for building this for us.

Continue to pray for the work of the building committee, the workers who are and will be laboring in construction, the interface with the government and, most importantly, that God will be pleased to be glorified through the future ministry done in the new facility.
